For many young gymnasts in the Xcel program, the dream of competing at the collegiate level often feels like uncharted territory. Xcel gymnastics, designed to offer a flexible yet competitive experience, has grown in popularity across the United States. But a common question arises: Can Xcel gymnasts compete in college gymnastics? The short answer is yes—with the right preparation, determination, and understanding of the pathway.
Xcel is a USA Gymnastics (USAG) program created as an alternative to the Junior Olympic (JO) program. It allows athletes to compete in gymnastics with more flexibility in training hours and routine composition while still maintaining a competitive environment. Xcel has several divisions, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, with Diamond being the most advanced.
While the JO program remains the primary feeder system for NCAA gymnastics, Xcel gymnasts can and do make their way onto collegiate teams—particularly at Division II, Division III, and club gymnastics levels.
Division I Teams: While most Division I teams primarily recruit Level 10 JO gymnasts, exceptional Xcel Diamond athletes with strong skills and scores may still catch a coach's eye.
Division II & III Teams: These schools often have more flexible recruiting criteria and may consider talented Xcel gymnasts.
College Club Gymnastics (NAIGC): The National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs (NAIGC) offers a fantastic pathway for gymnasts from all backgrounds, including Xcel, to continue competing in college.
Walk-On Opportunities: If a gymnast shows exceptional skill, dedication, and a willingness to improve, they may earn a walk-on spot on a college team.
Focus on Skill Development: Continue working on advanced skills that align with collegiate-level routines.
Build a Strong Competitive Record: Attend competitions and aim for high scores in events.
Create Highlight Videos: Showcase your strongest routines and send them to college coaches.
Communicate with College Coaches: Reach out to programs that align with your goals and share your interest.
Explore NAIGC Programs: If NCAA pathways seem limited, NAIGC offers a fulfilling college gymnastics experience.
Not every gymnast will compete at the NCAA Division I level, and that's okay. Club gymnastics through NAIGC offers a fun, competitive, and supportive environment that allows athletes to balance academics and athletics.
